Pool safety barriers

Although you want your pool fence to suit the aesthetic of your pool, and for it to be another addition to your outdoor area, you’ll need to ensure that it meets the strict guidelines.

In Victoria, glass pool fences must meet strict height, gap, and quality requirements. The Victorian Building Authority (VBA) regulates and enforces these standards.

Height

The top of the fence must be at least 1200 mm above the finished ground

Boundary fences must be at least 1800 mm high on the poolside

Gaps

Vertical gaps in the fence must be no wider than 100 mm

There must be no gaps larger than 100 mm under the fence

Gates

Gates must be self-latching, self-closing, and swing outwards from the pool area

Quality

The glass must be toughened safety glass to ensure durability and resilience against impacts

The glass must undergo strict quality testing to meet and exceed national safety regulations

Installation

The fence should be securely mounted, either using high-strength clamps or spigots

The fence should be installed on a solid foundation, either concrete or a similarly durable material

Maintenance

The fence must be maintained to ensure that young children are not able to climb and access the pool area
